The UNC men's lacrosse team will sport a slightly different look for an excellent cause when it takes the field on Saturday against Virginia. As part of their uniforms the Tar Heels will wear blue-and-white striped "bo-bo" socks, a Carolina twist on traditional clown socks worn by the character Ronald McDonald and a nod the team's longtime partner, the Ronald McDonald House of Chapel Hill. "People might think the socks look crazy," said UNC defensive midfielder Cole Brown, "but maybe they'll take a minute to stop and learn about why we're wearing them and supporting Ronald McDonald House."
The Ronald McDonald House of Chapel Hill serves as a home-away-from-home for families of young patients who are undergoing treatment at UNC Children's Hospital. In addition to wearing the eye-catching socks, the team is asking fans in attendance Saturday to bring a donation to benefit Ronald McDonald House. Wish list items are: Pop-tarts; granola bars; Nutri-grain bars; oatmeal/grits/soups in cups that can be microwaved; individual-sized beverages (bottled water, juice, etc.); paper towels; bleach; and activity books for children and adults. Donation bins will be located at the Dorrance Field entrance.
The third-ranked Tar Heels (8-1, 1-1 Atlantic Coast Conference) host No. 4 Virginia (8-2, 1-2 ACC) Saturday at 2 p.m. at Dorrance Field. Attendance is limited and all available tickets are sold out, but fans can watch the game live on ESPNU.
All year long, including this week as they've prepared to face the Cavaliers, the Tar Heels drive past the Ronald McDonald House, which sits on Old Mason Farm Road between the UNC campus and the Finley Practice Fields. On a regular basis, they stop in. UNC head coach Joe Breschi is a member of the RMH board of directors, and he and his family volunteer there often. He got his players involved, and the team spends time there doing yard work and other task around the facility.
"To us, the most important thing is not just to go, help out and leave, but it's learning the stories of the guests and why RMH is important to them," said Brown, a junior from Baltimore. "In many cases, the families there are traveling from long distances to receive the best medical care for their kids. RMH helps make that more affordable for them, and also more comfortable. If we can help make the experience even a little better for those families, that's an opportunity we're going to jump on."
Brown, who hopes to go on to medical school after UNC, will lead a group of Tar Heels volunteering at Ronald McDonald House on Friday afternoon, putting together activity kits for kids staying there. That's the kind of involvement Breschi has championed over the years and has come to expect from his team.
"Our team and our coaching staff have spent a lot of time there over the years and we really appreciate the ways we've been able to serve," Breschi said. "Wearing the 'bo-bo' socks is a great way to honor the House and let the families know, as well as the children being treated at UNC Hospitals, that we're thinking of them and playing for them."
