Fountain Top Freshman Finish in 28 Seasons
UNC junior Ryan Burnett shot a final-round 69 on Monday and freshman Peter Fountain finished tied for 13th as the University of North Carolina clinched a spot in the quarterfinals of the 2021 NCAA Men's Golf Championship at the Grayhawk Golf Club.
Carolina finished 72 holes of stroke play eighth in the 30-team field at 25-over-par 1145, seven strokes ahead of Louisville and Sam Houston, which tied for ninth.
The Tar Heels are the No. 8 seed and will play top-seed Arizona State in match play beginning at 7:10 a.m. local time Tuesday (10:10 a.m. Eastern). The winner advances to the semifinals on Tuesday afternoon to play the winner of the Oklahoma-Illinois match.
Regardless of the outcome of match play, Carolina is guaranteed a top-eight finish in the NCAA Championship, the Tar Heels' 22nd finish in the top 10, but first since tying for ninth in 2003. It will be Carolina's highest finish since at least 1993, when the Tar Heels were third.
Arizona State, which shot 5-under 275 today for the second-best round of the day, finished first in stroke play at 3 under par. The Sun Devils were the only team in the field to complete the four rounds under par.
Oklahoma State led after 54 holes, but the Cowboys shot 12 over par Monday to finish second at even. Pepperdine, which was paired with UNC, had the best round of the day at 9 under to secure the No. 3 seed in the quarterfinals at 5 over par for the tournament.
Oklahoma is the fourth seed (+10), Illinois is fifth (+14), Florida State is No. 6 (+16), Vanderbilt is seventh (+24) and UNC is eighth.
Fountain, the ACC champion, shot 2-over 72 today, but had Carolina's top finish for the sixth time in nine tournaments this season shooting 73-68-69-72 for a 2-over-par 282. The Raleigh native had the second-highest finish in the NCAA Championship by a freshman. Only Oklahoma State's Bo Jin, who finished second, had a better finish by a freshman.
Fountain's 13th place finish is Carolina's best since Ben Griffin tied for 11th in 2017 and UNC's best by a freshman since Rob Bradley and Lee McIntee tied for seventh in 1993.
Burnett was 1 over on his first nine (UNC began on the 10th hole), then birdied the 2nd, 5th and 8th holes and finished with a 69, his best round of the championship. He tied for 34th place after shooting 70-77-71-69 for a 7-over 287.
Ryan Gerard also tied for 34th place after a fourth-round 73. He shot 72-68-74-73 for 7-over 287.
Austin Greaser tied for 71st after a 78 today and fifth-year senior Austin Hitt tied for 7th after an 80 on Monday.
Clemson's Turk Pettit won the individual national championship by one stroke over Jin. Pettit shot 70 today to win the title with a 7-under 273.
