
Carolina Softball Mounts a Comeback, Falls to Louisville

Though the Cardinals took an early lead, the Tar Heels battled back, scoring in the second, fourth fifth and sixth to chip away at the lead. With a flurry of hits in the bottom of the sixth, the Heels brought the score to 9-7. Kiannah Pierce an Bri Stubbs both led the Tar Heels in scoring, with two runs each, with Campbell Hutcherson leading with two RBIs.
Carolina Softball honored the class of 2020 prior to first pitch, with a jersey presentation as well as dedications from their former teammates.
The Tar Heels (12-24, 8-18 ACC) return to Anderson Stadium on Saturday at 5:30 p.m. to take on the Louisville Cardinals (20-25-1, 14-19-1 ACC) for game two on Senior Night, honoring the class of 2021 before the start of the game.
Game Description
» Louisville opened the game with two home runs in the first, scoring five.
» Gaby Katz, taking over in the circle for the Tar Heels, had a 1-2-3 inning in the top of the second to help hold back Louisville.
» In the bottom the second, a double by Bri Stubbs helped the Tar Heels reach, and a passed ball by the Cardinals brought her home to get the Heels on the board, 5-1.
» Destiny Middleton had back-to-back catches, followed by a grab from Skyler Brooks to end the top of the third in fashion for the infield defense.
» Louisville answered with a bevy of scoring in the too of the fourth to extend the lead to 7-1.
» Carolina jumped back on the board in the bottom of the fourth, loading the bases on with singles from Brittany Pickett, Kiersten Licea and Campbell Hutcherson. Zoë Goodman also grounded to first to score Kayla Baptista to tighten the score to 7-4.
» Louisville's Leonhardt homered to right center, scoring two and extending the lead to 9-4.
» In the bottom of the fifth, Kiannah Pierce doubled, then Taylor Greene doubled to bring the score to 9-5.
» Destiny Middleton continued the hitting trend, knocking a triple. Kiannah Pierce followed her hit with a single, bringing her home. The Heels loaded the bases on a two out rally, scoring Pierce to bring the game within tow.
» Although a tight game, Louisville scored three more, including a home run from Carson Greenwood to take, and hold the lead 12-7 through the end of the game.
