Four Tar Heels Earn All-America Honors
June 16, 2021 | Field Hockey
Four Tar Heels have earned All-America recognition for the 2020-21 season, giving the Carolina program its highest total of honorees since 2014. Senior Amanda Hendry and junior Erin Matson were named to the first team, senior Eva Smolenaars to the second team and junior Meredith Sholder to the third team.
Â
All four earned first-team All-South Region honors and were named to the NCAA All-Tournament Team following UNC's national championship win in May.
Â
Â
It's the third year in a row that Matson has earned first-team honors. She is the seventh player in program history to earn first-team honors three or more times. A forward from Chadds Ford, Pa., Matson won the Honda Sport Award for the second year in a row and was named the ACC Offensive Player of the Year for the third time.
Â
Hendry, from Wilton, Conn., becomes the 41st Tar Heel player on the 68th occasion to earn first-team All-America honors. UNC's starting goalkeeper for the past four years, she was named to both the NCAA and ACC All-Tournament teams for the past year.
Â
Smolenaars, a midfielder from Veert, the Netherlands, was a first-team All-ACC selection.
Â
Sholder, a midfielder/forward from Alburtis, Pa., was a second-team All-ACC pick.
