Carolina Grad Promoted To New Role
August 23, 2021 | Women's Basketball
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – A familiar face in the Carolina women's basketball program is now in a new role. Liz Roberts, a four-year letterwinner for the Tar Heels and a graduate assistant coach last season, has been promoted to the role of Director of Recruiting Management and Student-Athlete Engagement. UNC head coach Courtney Banghart announced the promotion on Monday.
"I'm so thrilled to add Liz Roberts to our staff in this meaningful way," Banghart said. "To hire a former Tar Heel, into a role where she can share her love for this place and program, was the perfect fit. As a grad assistant last year, Liz helped out in all facets of this program. She proved to be bright, organized, innovative and passionate about ensuring this program reaches new heights. Liz bleeds the best blue and we look forward to her sharing so much with the future generation of Tar Heels!"
A native of Chapel Hill and record-breaking guard during her prep career at Durham Academy, Roberts walked on to the Tar Heel squad as a UNC freshman. In the fall of 2018, Banghart, then in her first season at UNC, awarded Roberts a scholarship for her senior season. As Banghart had previously coached in the Ivy League, which does not award athletic scholarships, Roberts' scholarship was the first that Banghart had bestowed.
After majoring in exercise and sport science with a minor in coaching education and earning Phi Beta Kappa honorary society induction, Roberts is now pursuing a master's degree in sport administration at UNC. Her thesis examines previous postseason experience as a predictor of success in the women's basketball NCAA Tournament.
"I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to be part of the Carolina women's basketball staff," Roberts said. "After playing one year for Coach Banghart and then being a graduate assistant last season, I have immense gratitude for this program and the people in it. I am so excited to give back to a program that has given so much to me both personally and professionally."
