Tar Heels Open Indoor Season At Virginia Tech Invitational
January 14, 2022 | Track & Field
BLACKSBURG, Va. – Fifteen Tar Heels competed at the Virginia Tech Invitational on Friday evening to kick off the 2022 indoor track & field season. In action at the Hokies' Rector Field House, Carolina entrants ran in the men's 300 meters, 1,000 meters and mile, and the women's 300 meters and 500 meters. In the field events, Tar Heels competed in the men's and women's weight throws and the women's unseeded pole vault.
The top finishers for the day were freshman Colton Sands in the mile and senior James Joycey in the weight throw, both of whom placed third. Three other Tar Heels joined Joycey in the men's weight throw, giving that event the largest UNC contingent of the night. Troy Yearwood was sixth, Madias Loper 11th and Brayden Radhuber 16th.
Radhuber was one of four true freshmen to compete in a Carolina uniform for the first time. The others were Alyssa Hernandez, 18th in the women's 500M; Gwyneth Goldowski, 14th in the women's 300M; and Sands in the men's mile.
UNC is back Saturday morning for Day 2 of action at the Virginia Tech Invitational. Loper, Radhuber and Yearwood will throw for the second day in a row, competing in shot put. Other Tar Heel events on Saturday will be the women's high jump, long jump and seeded pole vault; the men's seeded pole vault, the women's 200 meters, and the men's and women's 4x400 relays. Action starts at 11 a.m. and live results are available here.
