January 19, 2022 | Women's Basketball
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The North Carolina women's basketball team plays its only home game in a three-week span on Thursday, hosting Virginia at Carmichael Arena for a 6 p.m. tip-off.
Tickets are available at the Carmichael box office, which opens one hour before the game, and admission is free to UNC students and staff with a OneCard. For those who can't make it in person, the game will air on ACC Network Extra and on the Tar Heel Radio Network.
The 20th-ranked Tar Heels are 14-2 overall, 4-2 in Atlantic Coast Conference play, and 8-0 at home this season. They're facing off with the Cavaliers for the first time since the 2019-20 season as Virginia did not play after December last season.
It's Jersey Night and fans are encouraged to wear their favorite jerseys to the game. The first 500 in attendance will get free Carolina jersey rally towels. Additionally, now that classes are back in session, the Jordans giveaway for UNC students is back – one UNC-Chapel Hill student will win a free pair of Jordans in a postgame drawing.
The Rivalry
• UNC and Virginia are meeting for the 89th time in a series that dates back to the 1975-76 season. The Tar Heels lead the series 54-34 after winning the last three in a row and 23 of the last 26.
• The teams didn't meet at all last season, as Virginia ended play in December. The previous season, in 2019-20, UNC won twice: On Jan. 2, 2020, the Tar Heels won 65-47 in Charlottesville in what was Carolina coach Courtney Banghart's first ACC road victory. On Jan. 30, 2020, UNC won 78-68 in Chapel Hill. Senior Jaelynn Murray and junior Malu Tshitenge are the only Tar Heels who have played against the Cavaliers.
• Virginia's last win in Chapel Hill was during the 2000-01 season, 78-76 on Jan. 11, 2001. The Cavaliers swept the season's meetings that year but have not won back-to-back games since then. UNC has won the last 13 games at Carmichael.
• The Tar Heels and Cavaliers will meet again on Feb. 24 in Charlottesville in the second-to-last game of the regular season.
Scouting the Cavaliers
Virginia is 3-11 overall and 0-4 in ACC play embarking on a busy stretch. After Sunday's game against Syracuse was canceled due to weather concerns, UVA is now set to play three games in a six-day span, all on the road. The Cavaliers played at Virginia Tech on Tuesday, falling 69-52. After Thursday's game against Carolina, they're back in the Triangle to face Duke on Sunday.
• Thursday's game against No. 20 UNC is the first in a string of three straight matchups against ranked teams for Virginia. Sunday the Cavaliers face No. 21 Duke then they host No. 19 Notre Dame on Jan. 25.
• Amandine Toi leads the team in scoring with 13.1 points per game. Camryn Taylor is also in double figures, averaging 11.8 points per game. Taylor is also the team's top rebounder with 6.1 boards per game.
