October 14, 2022 | Cross Country
MADISON, WIS.—The University of North Carolina men's and women's cross country teams both turned in top-notch performances on Friday against a strong field at the Nuttycombe Invitational. The Carolina women finished sixth, while the men were 14th in one of the nation's premier meets.
The 35-team men's field included 22 teams that finished in the top 31 at the 2021 NCAA Championships. Similarly, the 36-school women's field featured 17 top-25 national finishers from last year.
The races were held on the Thomas Zimmer Championship Cross Country Course and consisted of two races per gender. Teams were allowed to run seven athletes in the "A" race and an unlimited amount of athletes in the "B" races.
Sophomore Brynn Brown led the Tar Heel women in the "A" race with a 19th-place finish, finishing the 6K course in 20:13.9. Kelsey Harrington finished 27th in 20:19.5, and Taryn Parks was 50th in 20:32.5. UNC's Fatima Alanis was 89th in a time of 20:49.8, Sasha Neglia was 95th in 20:52.1, Natalie Tyner was 107th in 20:56.4 and Carlee Hanen was 134th in 21:05.0.
On the men's side, Parker Wolfe led Carolina once again, finishing sixth in the 8K "A" race in 23:17.9. John Tatter finished 64th in 23:52.6, Marshall Williamson was 71st in 23:55.9, Ethan Strand was 117th in 24:10.9, Patrick Anderson was 129th in 24:15.0, Crawford Hope was 176th in 24:35.2 and Will Coogan was 184th in 24:40.7.
The 10th-ranked Carolina men and the 11th-ranked women entered Friday's race with perfect records this fall. The No. 10 ranking for the men's team is the highest in program history and the first in the top 10. Both UNC squads had won all three of their previous races in 2022, including the Charlotte Opener (September 2), the Coaching Tree Invitational (September 16) and the Paul Short Run (September 30).
Friday was the final regular season meet of the season for UNC. The Tar Heels will open postseason competition and return to action in two weeks at the Atlantic Coast Conference Championships, to be hosted on October 28 by the University of Virginia in Earlysville, Va.
The NCAA Southeast Regional meet will be on November 11 in Louisville, Ky.
