October 18, 2022 | Women's Basketball
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – North Carolina will start the women's basketball season ranked 12th in the preseason Associated Press poll, which was released on Tuesday.
The ranking is the Tar Heels' highest in more than seven years, since the middle of the 2014-15 season.
UNC opens the season on Nov. 9 against Jackson State, with a 7 p.m. tipoff at Carmichael Arena. The 2022-23 Tar Heel roster includes the top four scorers and eight of the top nine from last year, when Carolina reached the NCAA Sweet 16 and finished 25-7 overall.
The last time the Tar Heels were ranked this high in the preseason was 2013-14, when UNC was also No. 12 in the first AP poll. Carolina reached as high as No. 6 in the AP rankings that season and then also got as high as No. 6 in 2014-15. The Tar Heels were ranked No. 12 in the AP poll on Jan. 19, 2015, and have not been as high since then.
After being out of the poll since the 2015-16 preseason, UNC climbed back in on Dec. 16, 2021. The Tar Heels got as high as No. 16 at the end of February and were ranked 17th in the final AP poll of the season, released on March 14 prior to NCAA Tournament play.
Carolina will play at least nine games and possibly 10 against teams ranked in the preseason Top 25. UNC will face No. 7 Louisville, No. 9 Notre Dame, No. 10 NC State (twice) and No. 13 Virginia Tech (twice) during the Atlantic Coast Conference season, and No. 11 Indiana, No. 20 Oregon, No. 25 Michigan and possibly No. 8 Iowa State in nonconference play.
