The first-ever meeting between UNC and Jackson State will air live on ACC Network Extra. Fans can also listen on the Tar Heel Radio Network.
The Tar Heels come into the season ranked 12th nationally, the program's highest spot in more than seven years. Last year UNC finished 25-7, reaching the NCAA Sweet 16 for the first time since 2015.
The Tigers are the two-time defending SWAC champions and have advanced to the NCAA Tournament in each of the past two season.
UNC vs. JSU
• The Tar Heels and Tigers are meeting for the first time.
• Both were NCAA Tournament teams in 2022-23, with Jackson State earning its berth as champion of the SWAC and UNC receiving an at-large bid.
• It's the second year in a row the Tar Heels have opened against a conference champion. Last year's first opponent was North Carolina A&T, which was coming off a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference title.
Noting the Tar Heels
• The Tar Heels return four starters, the top four scorers, and eight of the top nine scorers from last season's squad. The returners accounted for 86 percent of the scoring and rebounding on last year's team.
• The 2022-23 season is head coach Courtney Banghart's fourth in Chapel Hill and 16th as a head coach. She has led her teams to 10 NCAA Tournament appearances, including 2021 and 2022 at UNC.
• UNC has just one newcomer on the roster, freshman guard Paulina Paris.
• Although there are three seniors on this year's team, forward Malu Tshitenge is the only fourth-year UNC player. She's the sole Tar Heel who was part of Banghart's first Carolina squad in 2019-20.
Scouting the Tigers
Jackson State is the two-time defending SWAC champion and last season became the first team in conference history to go 18-0 in league play. The Tigers have won 37 consecutive games against SWAC opponents.
• Forward Daja Woodard was selected the Preseason SWAC Defensive Player of the Year. Miya Crump was also named to the Preseason All-SWAC Team.
• Coach Tomekia Reed has been named the National HBCU Coach of the Year in each of the past two seasons. In her four seasons at Jackson State, she has led the team to three regular season SWAC titles and tournament titles in 2021 and 2022, earning back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances.
