Heels Play Two On Saturday

Chapel Hill, NC --Â With sunny skies and 70-degree temperatures on Saturday and a cold rain in the forecast for Sunday, the Tar Heels packed two days of action into one with a pair of scrimmages on Saturday afternoon at Boshamer Stadium. Navy won the opening seven-inning scrimmage 4-3, then took the following six-inning scrimmage by a 6-2 score.
In game one, Joe Jaconski doubled to left in the second and later scored on Clemente Inclan's safety squeeze for a 1-0 Navy lead. Navy scored three more runs in the fifth. Inclan scored on a passed ball before Danny Serretti's double plated Casey Cook for the second run of the inning. Vance Honeycutt scored the last run of the inning on a safety squeeze.
Colby Wilkerson scored Blue's first run with a 399-foot solo homer to left center in the fifth. Reece Holbrook drilled a 389-foot homer to right center for Blue in the sixth, then Patrick Alvarez scored on a balk to pull Blue to within the final 4-3 margin.
Will Sandy started for Navy, with Davis Palermo and Kyle Mott throwing in relief. Max Carlson started for Blue, and Shawn Rapp and Connor Ollio threw in relief.
Navy got off to a fast start in game two with a pair of runs in the second. Brandon Eike's sacrifice fly to center drove in Cook, then Mikey Madej drove in Joe Jaconski with a double. Vance Honeycutt added another run for Navy by stealing home in the third.
After Casey Cook doubled in the fifth, Vancy Honeycutt crushed a 438-foot homer off the batter's eye in center for a 5-0 lead. Â Cook drove in Brandon Eike with a single to left in the sixth for Navy's sixth and final run. Blue got their only two runs in the bottom of the sixth and final inning. Mac Horvath's double scored Reece Holbrook, then Patrick Alvarez scored on a fielder's choice for the final run of the scrimmage.

Five Navy players had multiple base hits for the combined two games. Honeycutt was 3-6 with two RBI and two runs scored. Cook was 3-7 with one RBI and two runs scored. Joe Jaconski and Hunter Stokely were both 2-5 and Johnny Castagnozzi was 2-6.
Two Blue hitters had multiple base hits. Patrick Alvarez was 3-5 with two runs scored, while Colby Wilkerson was 2-5 with one RBI and one run scored.
Will Sandy went 5.1 innings for Navy in game one, giving up two runs on five hits while striking out three and walking one. Shaddon Peavyhouse started game two for Navy and also went 5.1 innings, giving up no runs on two hits and striking out four.
The Tar Heels will open the 2022 season next Friday at 4:00 pm against Seton Hall at the Bosh.
