Bats Stay Hot In Romp Over Seton Hall
February 19, 2022 | Baseball
The Tar Heels picked up a pair of unearned runs in the first inning as the Pirates committed three errors, including two on failed pick off attempts. Freshman Vance Honeycutt homered to lead off the second inning and Tomas Frick drove in the Carolina's fourth run in the fourth. UNC scored in every inning but the sixth.
Redshirt freshman Davis Palermo earned the win in relief, tossing two innings after starting pitcher Max Carlson exited following four innings of work. He allowed just three hits and struck out five in his first appearance since April.
NOTABLES
• The Tar Heels have won their first two games of the season by a combined scored of 33-3. It's the most runs they've scored in the initial pair of games since 2003 when they scored 37 total runs (19 vs. Delaware State, 18 vs. Seton Hall).
• Freshman Vance Honeycutt hit his third home run of the season and became the first Tar Heel since Seth Williams in 2008 to hit three home runs in the first two games.
• Carolina's 19-run margin of victory was its highest run differential since it blanked Virginia Tech,20-0, on May 14, 2017.
• Johnny Castagnozzi, Tomas Frick, and Danny Serretti have all recorded multiple hits in each of the first two games.
• Angel Zarate was 2-for-4 today to extend his on-base streak to 25 games dating back to last season.
• Freshman Reece Holbrook made his Carolina debut and singled in his first at bat.
• Freshman Joe Jaconski and Sienna transfer Connor Bovair made their UNC debuts. Jaconski was 0-for-2 at the plate, while Bovair tossed one scoreless inning of relief.
• Carlson made his first appearance in a Carolina uniform since April 11, 2021, against Duke.
• The Tar Heels used four pitchers in relief with Palermo throwing two and Bovair, Caleb Cozart and Connor Ollio tossing one each. Each relief pitcher struck out one batter.
• Seton Hall pitchers issued eight walks, hit four batters, and threw three wild pitches.
HOW IT HAPPENED
• After Carlson retired the Pirates in order in the top of the first, Zarate led off the bottom of the inning with a double then advanced to third on a dropped fly ball off the bat of Serretti before scoring on a failed pick-off attempt. Serretti moved to second on the failed pick-off attempt and then advanced to third base on another attempt to catch him napping. He later scored on Frick's fly foul ball out.
• Honeycutt homered in the second inning to make it 3-0 and Frick drove in another run in the third inning to give UNC a four-run lead.
• The Tar Heels scored twice in the fourth inning as Castagnozzi came home on a throwing error and Frick plated run number six on a base hit by Zarate.
• Alberto Osuna drove in Frick with an RBI-single in fifth inning.
• Carolina scored its first four runs in the seventh on a walk, hit batter and two RBI singles. Holbrook, Eric Grintz and Mac Horvath each drove in a pair of runs with one swing. Casey Cook was hit by a pitch to drive in the 11th run of the frame.
• Mikey Madej drew a bases loaded walk in the eighth to conclude the scoring.
UP NEXT
• The Tar Heels and Pirates will conclude their three-game series on Sunday with the first pitch schedule to be thrown at 1 p.m.
