Men's Tennis Hosts Columbia Saturday In Matchup Of Ranked Foes

CHAPEL HILL–The University of North Carolina men's tennis team will host a big home match on Saturday when Columbia visits the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center at 1 p.m. The Tar Heels are ranked No. 23 in the nation in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association rankings, and the Lions are ranked No. 23.
Columbia's roster features a pair of top-100 singles players in the ITA rankings, led by No. 7 Alex Kotzen and also including No. 96 Hugo Hashimoto. The Lions' doubles duo of Max Westphal and Theo Winegar are ranked No. 29 in the latest ITA rankings.
The Tar Heels are also represented in the latest rankings, led by a pair of top doubles teams. Brian Cernoch and Mac Kiger are 11-4 this season with a pair of wins over top-10 foes and were ranked No. 4 this week, moving all the way up from No. 32 in the last rankings.Â
Casey Kania and Logan Zapp are 15-5 this season and ranked No. 25. Cernoch is No. 73 in the singles rankings.
Carolina is 5-3 this season and is trying to rebound from back-to-back losses to 16th-ranked NC State and No. 53 Illinois. Earlier this spring, Carolina beat South Carolina, 4-2, in Chapel Hill, handing the 11-2 and sixth-ranked Gamecocks a loss.
The Tar Heels are opening a three-match homestand. After Saturday's match, Carolina will open Atlantic Coast Conference play next weekend. Virginia Tech will visit on Friday March 4, followed by a match with Virginia on Sunday March 6.
