Senior Night Monday Vs. Syracuse
February 27, 2022 | Men's Basketball
GAME 30
• Carolina hosts Syracuse in its final home of the season at 7 p.m. on Monday, February 28 (ESPN).
• The Tar Heels are 21-8 overall, 13-5 in the ACC. UNC has won its last three games, including road wins at Virginia Tech and NC State and a home win a week ago over Louisville.
• Senior game ceremonies honoring Leaky Black, Brady Manek and Ryan McAdoo are set to begin at 6:40 p.m.
• Carolina is in third place in the ACC at 13-5, two games behind Duke and a game behind Notre Dame. The Tar Heels have clinched a bye on day one of the ACC Tournament and would clinch a top four seed and a double bye with a win over Syracuse.
• The Tar Heels are coming off an 84-74 win at NC State on Saturday. Carolina has eight wins in its last nine games against the Wolfpack at PNC Arena.
• Armando Bacot had 28 points, 18 rebounds and five blocks (all game highs), becoming the first Tar Heel ever to compile at least 20 points, 15 rebounds and five blocks in a game.
• Brady Manek scored 14 of his 16 points in the first half and made his 299th and 300th career three-pointers.
• Puff Johnson played a career-high 29 minutes and scored a career-high 16 points (12 in the second half).
• Johnson saw extra time as Leaky Black hyper-extended his right knee late in the first half and did not return to the game.
• Caleb Love played all 40 minutes for the second game in a row, the first Tar Heel to do so since Ed Cota in the 2000 NCAA Tournament.
BACOT ON A HISTORIC RUN
• ACC Player-of-the-Year candidate Armando Bacot is on pace to lead the ACC in field goal percentage and rebounding for the ninth time in 69 seasons and in field goal percentage, rebounding and double-doubles for just the sixth time ever (with Duke's Marvin Bagley in 2018, Wake Forest's Tim Duncan in 1997, Clemson's Dale Davis in 1990, Clemson's Horace Grant in 1987 and Virginia's Ralph Sampson in 1983).
• Duncan is the only ACC player with higher scoring and rebound averages and a higher field goal percentage than Bacot.
• Bacot is averaging 16.3 points and 12.5 rebounds, shooting 59.1% and has blocked 52 shots. No other Tar Heel has ever reached all four of those numbers in a season.
• Bacot is averaging an astounding 14.3 rebounds over the first 18 ACC games. That is the highest average in league play since Wake Forest's Tim Duncan averaged 14.9 in 16 games in 1996-97.Â
• Bacot's 14.3 rebounds in ACC games are the fourth highest ever by a Tar Heel. Billy Cunningham averaged 16.6 in 1962-63, 16.0 in 1963-64 and 14.4 in 1964-65.
• Bacot has 22 double-doubles and is one from tying Brice Johnson's single-season record in 2015-16.
• Bacot had 18 rebounds at NC State (which tied the UNC record for rebounds in a game against the Wolfpack), his 23rd game this season with 10 or more, which tied the record Johnson set in 2015-16.
UNC-SYRACUSE ALL-TIME
• Carolina is 14-6 against the Orange, including 10-3 since Syracuse joined the ACC.
• The Tar Heels are 5-0 in the Smith Center, including last season's 81-75 win on 1/12/21.
LAST SEASON IN CHAPEL HILL
• Armando Bacot (15/12) and Garrison Brooks (16/10) had double-doubles for the Tar Heels in their 81-75 win.
• RJ Davis made two threes and added a dozen points.
• The game was tied at 40 the half and as late as 3:00 left in the game. Bacot made consecutive field goals with 1:22 and 58 seconds to play to extend Carolina's lead to 75-70.
• Carolina had 24 offensive rebounds (Syracuse had 21 defensive rebounds) that led to 24 second-chance points.
• Leaky Black had seven assists and blocked a career-high three shots.
LAST SEASON IN SYRACUSE
• Carolina committed 20 turnovers that led to 28 Syracuse points in the Orange's two-point win.
• Syracuse made 15 steals that helped the Orange amass 20 fastbreak points.Â
• Carolina outrebounded Syracuse, 53-33, including a 26-13 advantage on the offensive boards that led to 25 second-chance points for the Tar Heels.
• Syracuse outscored UNC 24 to 12 from the three-point line. The Orange made 7 of 17 threes in the first half, while the Tar Heels went 0 for 10 in the opening stanza and 4 for 20 for the game.
• Bacot led UNC with 18 points and 15 rebounds (eight offensive).Â
• Garrison Brooks (11) and Caleb Love (10) also scored in double figures.
• Buddy Boeheim scored 17 first-half points for the Orange. When the teams played in Chapel Hill on 1/12/21, he scored 18 first-half points but was held scoreless in the second. In the game at Syracuse, he added nine in the second to finish with a game-high 26.
300 FOR BRADY
• Brady Manek, a 6-9 power forward, came to UNC with a track record for making three-pointers. He made 235 in four seasons at Oklahoma, becoming the tallest player in Big 12 history to make 200 threes.
• Manek leads the team with 65 threes. Manek is third in percentage at .385, which is .002 ahead of his previous career-best .383 as a freshman at Oklahoma.
• His two threes in the first half at NC State on Saturday gave him 300 career three-pointers.Â
• Manek has made at least one three-pointer in 123 of 151 games and multiple threes 79 times (at least one in 27 of 29 games as a Tar Heel with two or more 16 times).
• Manek is averaging 2.24 threes per game this season, the second-most by a Tar Heel who measured 6-9 or taller behind only Cameron Johnson, who averaged 2.67 threes in earning first-team All-ACC honors in 2018-19.
• Johnson and Reggie Bullock are the only Tar Heels to play significant time at power forward (the 4) and average more threes per game than Manek, who plays almost exclusively at the 4. Bullock averaged 2.34 threes in 2012-13, when UNC played four perimeter players around James Michael McAdoo at the 5. Johnson also split time at the 3 and 4 in 2018-19.
• Manek is one of three Tar Heels 6-9 or taller to make 50 threes in a season. Cameron Johnson made 96 in 36 games in 2018-19, Ademola Okulaja made 59 in 34 games in 1998-99 and Manek has made 65 in 29 games.

• Davis hit a career-high six three-pointers in November in a 26-point outing against Brown.
• Love is making 38.8% of his three-point attempts, up from 26.6% a year ago. Davis has improved from 32.3 to 39.8%.
• In Carolina's 21 wins, Love and Davis are shooting 43.1% and 43.0%, respectively from three. In the eight losses, Davis has made 30.0% and Love 26.2% from three.
BLACK SIXTH TAR HEEL ON VERSATILE LIST
• Leaky Black became the sixth Tar Heel to amass 500 career points, 400 rebounds, 200 assists, 100 steals and 50 blocks.
• The only other Tar Heels to hit each mark are James Worthy, George Lynch, Jackie Manuel, David Noel and Danny Green.
• ESPN analyst Jay Bilas listed Black as one of three players to consider for ACC Defensive Player of the Year honors.
• The Concord, N.C., native is shooting career best percentages from the floor (.500), from three (.419) and the free throw line (.867).

Not everyone will understand, but those who know our family are very aware of the circumstances and challenges we are facing. As much as I love this University and basketball, being in the middle of a health crisis is where our family is right now and it's where I need to be. After the loss of several very special family members this past year, I came close to losing my dad in December and my grandma is currently in the ICU. With my dad recovering and my grandma fighting for her life, it's not even a question to me where I need to be right now.Â
My family is my world and I will always be there for them. The past few months have quickly changed my perspective on life and I have put this into God's hands and trust His guidance.Times like this bring out the beauty in God's people and I thank all of Tar Heel Nation, my coaches and my teammates for all the love and support. I thank you for lifting us up with your powerful prayers. The University, this team and fans are special. Go Tar Heels."
