Ortega's Huge Day Leads Offensive Explosion At High Point, 23-9

HIGH POINT, N.C.—Jamie Ortega had a huge day as the No. 1-ranked North Carolina women's lacrosse team beat High Point, 23-9, on a wet Wednesday afternoon at Vert Stadium. Ortega tied her season high with six goals and set a season high with nine points.
She became the fifth player in NCAA history and the second in Atlantic Coast Conference history to record 400 career points when she scored in the opening minutes to give Carolina a 1-0 lead.
Nine Tar Heels scored goals as UNC out-shot the Panthers, 48-23. Carolina had 23 goals and 16 assists for a school-record 39 points in the game. The 16 assists tied the program record.
Ortega now has 408 career points and is 37 behind the all-time ACC record of 445 set by Jen Adams of Maryland (1998-2001). She passed Courtney Murphy of Stony Brook (2014-18) for fourth place in NCAA history in career points on Wednesday.
Ortega posted her 29th career game with at least five goals, doing so before halftime in a furious, 11-2 UNC rally in the second quarter. High Point scored four consecutive goals to close the first period with a 5-2 lead. That three-goal deficit was the largest of the season for Carolina through 10 games.
UNC responded with authority with its second-quarter run, taking control and eventually putting the game out of reach early in the second half.
Taylor Moreno (10-0) started her 64th career game and won her 58th in the cage.
The Tar Heels posted their 36th consecutive regular season victory, their 16th in a row on the road and their 37th in the last 38 games overall.
The game originally was scheduled for 5 p.m. but started early at 4 p.m. due to weather. A tornado warning in the area delayed the game by over 20 minutes between the first and second quarters before action resumed.
In addition to Ortega's output, Carolina got three goals and three assists from Scottie Rose Growney and four goals and two assists from Caitlyn Wurzburger. Andie Aldave added three goals and two assists, and Brooklyn Neumen had a goal and two assists. Tayler Warehime scored three times in her most extensive playing time as she recovers from a shoulder injury that had sidelined her for several games earlier this season. Emily Nalls had nine draw controls.
The Tar Heels improved to 10-0 this season. HPU fell to 1-6.
The Tar Heels will return to action on Saturday March 26 at home at 11 a.m. versus Virginia Tech.
