Baseball Racks Up 17 Hits In Win Over Yellow Jackets
April 16, 2022 | Baseball
CHAPEL HILL – The University of North Carolina baseball team snapped a four-game losing streak with a 10-5 win over Georgia Tech at Boshamer Stadium on Saturday. The Diamond Heels collected 17 hits, including six players with multiple hits, to also end a three-game slide against the Yellow Jackets.
UNC (22-13, 8-9 ACC) plated four runs in the third inning after each team scored a run in the first. Danny Serretti had an RBI-triple, Alberto Osuna a run scoring single. Mikey Madej lifted a sacrifice fly and Hunter Stokely singled to knock home the final run of the frame.
Horvath homered to lead off the fourth inning and Johnny Castagnozzi knocked in his second run of the game with a one-out RBI single. UNC then added three runs in the seventh with Vance Honeycutt homering to lead off the frame and Madej slapping a two-run single through the right side.
Junior Brandon Schaeffer (3-1) pitched 5.2 innings and became the first Tar Heel starting pitcher to throw 5.0 or more innings since Max Carlson at Miami (Fla.) on March 27. Schaeffer surrendered four runs but gave the Carolina bullpen a much-needed rest.
"Trying to go deeper into games has been a big emphasis for the starters," Schaeffer said. "I know the bullpen has been taxed and used a lot recently. One of my strengths has been the ability to go deep into games. Whether there is a little adversity early like there was in the first inning or as the game goes on, it's just a matter of making pitches and trusting your defense."
Nick Pry came out of the bullpen and held Georgia Tech (22-14, 8-9) to one run and two hits in 3.0 innings before Davis Palermo came on the get the 27th out on one pitch.
Schaeffer's win was his first since February 25 against East Carolina, while Logan McGuire (2-2) suffered his first loss since March 19 at Wake Forest.
