April 9, 2022 | Women's Lacrosse
SYRACUSE, N.Y.—Jamie Ortega scored a game-high five goals to lead the No. 1-ranked University of North Carolina women's lacrosse team to a 14-12 win at No. 4 Syracuse on Saturday afternoon at the Carrier Dome.
The Tar Heels won the matchup of the Atlantic Coast Conference's two undefeated teams and solidified their spot atop of the conference standings with two games to play.
The game was played in front of 2,907 fans, the largest home crowd in Syracuse's program history.
Ortega (five goals, one assist on Saturday) posted her 31st career game with at least five goals. She is second in ACC history and third in NCAA annals with 424 points in her career. Ortega has 11 goals in her last two games and 20 goals, five assists and 25 points in her last four outings.
"Jamie's a really elite player, one of the best in the country, and if you don't play her right or if you don't double early, she's gonna score," head coach Jenny Levy told Inside Lacrosse after the game.
Scottie Rose Growney and Andie Aldave both scored twice for Carolina in the win, and Caitlyn Wurzburger had a goal and two assists.
The Tar Heels posted their 39th consecutive regular season victory, their 17th in a row on the road and their 40th in the last 41 games overall. UNC is 62-6 in its last 68 games against Atlantic Coast Conference opponents (regular season and postseason).
The game was tied, 7-7, at halftime, and the Orange scored the first goal after the break to take an 8-7 lead. The Tar Heels responded with a 4-0 run in a span of 4:15 to take an 11-8 lead midway through the third. Syracuse rallied with back-to-back goals to make the score 11-10 UNC late in the third quarter.
Carolina scored three of the game's final five goals to ice the victory.
The Tar Heels improved to 13-0 this season, 6-0 in the ACC. Syracuse fell to 10-3, 5-1 and lost its first home game of the year after winning seven in a row to start 2022 in the Carrier Dome.
Taylor Moreno (13-0) started her 67th career game in goal for UNC and improved to 61-6 in the cage all-time, making eight saves and holding the Orange scoreless for nearly 10 minutes in the second half as the Tar Heels seized control of the action. Moreno made a huge save on a free position try by Emily Hawryschuk in a key moment with 2:29 left in the third quarter and another in the final minute on a shot by Olivia Adamson.
Former Tar Heel Kimber Hower started and went the distance in goal for the Orange, making five saves.
Meaghan Tyrell led Syracuse with four goals and two assists. She had three goals in the first quarter before three-time UNC All-America defender Emma Trenchard locked down on her and held her scoreless until the 8:09 mark of the fourth quarter, at which point the Tar Heels had seized control of the game's rhythm and momentum.
