Carolina Field Hockey Announces 2022 Schedule
June 27, 2022 | Field Hockey
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The UNC field hockey team will play on it home turf Karen Shelton Stadium at least six times in the 2022 season and could play up to six additional games elsewhere in the state of North Carolina.

"I'm so excited about the season ahead of us," said North Carolina head coach Karen Shelton. "This schedule will put our team to the test and that's what we want, to continually build and get stronger as we work toward the postseason."

After a trio of exhibition games in mid-August, the Tar Heels open the fall on Aug. 26 just down Interstate 40 in Winston-Salem, N.C., taking on Michigan as part of the annual ACC-Big Ten Challenge, which also includes Iowa and host Wake Forest. After playing the Wolverines on Friday, UNC will play the Hawkeyes on Aug. 28, also in Winston-Salem.

UNC opens the home season on Sept. 2 with a four-team event in Chapel Hill. As part of the ACC/Ivy League Conference Crossover, Carolina hosts Princeton on Sept. 2 and Penn on Sept. 4. Louisville is the fourth team participating.

The Tar Heels then will head for the West Coast for just the second time in program history. UNC will play at California on Sept. 9 and at Stanford on Sept. 11. "It will be great experience for our team, and it's also a way for us to support the West Coast teams, particularly Stanford, which was so close to having its program dropped," Shelton said. "It's valuable for our game to have strong teams throughout the country, and we look forward to playing in California. We hope UNC alums out there who haven't had the opportunity to see our team in person will come out and support the Tar Heels."

Back in the Eastern time zone, Carolina will travel to open Atlantic Coast Conference play at Louisville on Sept. 16 before returning to Chapel Hill to host Wake Forest on Sept. 23 for the ACC home opener. The Tar Heels step outside the conference again to play at Liberty Oct. 2 then travel to the Northeast for games at Boston College on Oct. 7 and Connecticut on Oct. 9.

After returning from that trip, Carolina won't leave the state again until potential NCAA Tournament play. UNC will host Syracuse on Oct. 14, Virginia on Oct. 21 and Saint Joseph's on Oct. 23 for Senior Day. The final regular season game is at Duke on Oct. 29, and the conference tournament is in Durham as well, this year moved up to a Tuesday/Wednesday/Friday format on Nov. 1, 2 and 4th.

This year's NCAA Championship is set for Storrs, Conn., on Nov. 18 and 20th.
