Season Two Of Athletes Unlimited Pro League Begins Thursday
July 20, 2022 | Women's Lacrosse
CHAPEL HILL – Athletes Unlimited is set to begin season two of its professional women's lacrosse league on Thursday, July 21 at USA Lacrosse Headquarters in Sparks, Md.
Fourteen former University of North Carolina standouts are slated to take part in the league: Kristen Carr, Sam Geiersbach, Scottie Rose Growney, Ally Mastroianni, Marie McCool, Amber Falcone McKenzie, Kerrigan Miller, Taylor Moreno, Jamie Ortega, Sammy Jo Tracy, Emma Trenchard, Caroline Wakefield, Caylee Waters and Kayla Wood.
Four national champion All-Americans in Ortega (No. 2), Trenchard (No. 3), Moreno (No. 5) and Mastroianni (No. 8) were selected in the Athletes Unlimited draft on June 1. Carr, McCool, McKenzie, Tracy, Wakefield, Waters and Wood are all returning players of the league, which launched its inaugural season last year.Â
The all-star roster features 56 players, including several United States National Team members and former college stars. Athlete members will recruit fellow pros, create playing rules and retain equity in the league. Six games will be contested in each of the four weeks of the season beginning July 21 and ending Aug. 14.
Athletes Unlimited Lacrosse plays a short-form, fast-paced format consisting of eight-minute quarters, 10 v. 10 gameplay and a 60-second shot clock all housed on a 90 yd. x 60 yd. playing field. Play will begin with draws at the beginning of each quarter as well as after every goal.
The top four players become captains each week and draft their teams from scratch for the following week's games. Based on the scoring system, all players can win or lose points during every game and athletes score points as individuals and as a team to win MVP titles and cash bonuses.
Waters, who helped lead Team USA to gold at the 2022 World Lacrosse Championship earlier this month, was selected as one of the four team captains for week one.
After a new multi-year rights agreement between Athletes Unlimited and ESPN, all games in season two will be broadcast across ESPN platforms. Seven games will air on ESPN2, nine games will be available on ESPNU and the remaining eight will be on ESPN+.
The complete schedule, including broadcast information, can be found here.
