January 5, 2023 | Women's Gymnastics
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The 2023 season officially gets underway Friday as University of North Carolina gymnastics travels to Las Vegas, Nevada, for the inaugural Super 16 presented by Ozone. The Tar Heels will compete against Fisk, Southern Utah and Washington at 5 p.m. ET (2 p.m. PT) inside the Orleans Arena.
The Super 16 presented by Ozone is the largest women's collegiate invitational featuring more than 300 athletes from 16 programs. The two-day competition will have four sessions with team, all-around and event champions for each quad. UNC is in the meet's opening session, which will be aired live on Big Ten Network.
Carolina checked in at No. 27 in the latest WCGA poll, its highest preseason ranking since 2007 and its eighth time receiving a preseason nod since 2001. Fifteen of the 16 participating teams in Las Vegas are ranked, including No. 21 Washington and No. 28 Southern Utah. The meet will mark the first in history for Fisk, the first Historically Black College or University to have a women's collegiate gymnastics team.
The Tar Heels are eager to build upon a successful 2022 campaign where they saw their best final NCAA ranking in a decade at No. 32. UNC received its highest national qualifying score since 2004 and earned its first NCAA Regional berth in five years while Julia Knower (all-around), Lali Dekanoidze (vault) and All-American Elizabeth Culton (beam, bars) qualified as individual event specialists.
Prior to its remarkable NCAA postseason run, UNC was crowned the outright East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) regular season champion after posting an undefeated 7-0 record against conference opponents. Five gymnasts in Culton, Dekanoidze, Bri Greenlow, Knower and Isabelle Schaefer earned a combined 12 All-EAGL honors.
Following their trip to Las Vegas, the Tar Heels return to Chapel Hill for the home opener on Monday, Jan. 9 against NC State at 6 p.m.
