CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The UNC men's and women's cross country teams will compete at the 2023 NCAA Southeast Regional in Spartanburg, S.C., on Friday, Nov. 10, at the Roger Milliken Center.
The women's 6K is set for 11 a.m., while the men's 10K begins at noon. The top two teams and the first four finishers in the race not associated with those two teams will advance to the NCAA Championships on Nov. 18 in Charlottesville, Va.
The Carolina men will look to win their second consecutive NCAA Southeast Regional title after capturing the ACC Championship for the first time since 1985, with junior Parker Wolfe capturing the program's first individual title since 1997. Alex Phillip (4th), Ethan Strand (6th), and Jake Gebhardt (9th) finished inside the top-10 and earned all-conference honors. UNC placed its top seven runners inside the top 35 to finish 16 points ahead of second-place Syracuse.
The Tar Heel men moved up to No. 1 in the most recent USTFCCCA Southeast Region rankings and surged six spots to match a program-best No. 5 national ranking, a position held in both Week 2 and 3.
At last year's NCAA Southeast Regional, UNC finished 18 points ahead of second-place Virginia to win its first regional title since 1980. Wolfe took second place to lead the Tar Heel men.
The Carolina women look to qualify for their fourth-straight NCAA Championship following a fifth-place finish at the ACC Championships. Junior Fatima Alanis earned All-ACC honors with a 12th-place finish.
Alanis was one of seven Tar Heels to finish in the top 30 at the 2022 regional championship along with Kelsey Harrington, Eva Klingbeil, and Taryn Parks, who are all slated to race this weekend.
The women's squad is ranked No. 4 in the latest USTFCCCA regional rankings behind N.C. State, Virginia and Furman.
