No. 1 Women’s Lacrosse Cruises Past Liberty, 18-6

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The No. 1 University of North Carolina women's lacrosse team defeated Liberty, 18-6, on Wednesday evening at Dorrance Field, improving to 2-0 on the young season while the Flames begin their year at 0-1.

The Tar Heels have a quick turnaround before hosting No. 7 Florida on Saturday, Feb. 18, for the first top-10 showdown of the season. First draw is slated for noon ET at Dorrance Field and the game will be aired on ACC Network. Tickets are available for purchase here.

How It Happened
- Liberty jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead before Kiley Mottice notched her first goal as a Tar Heel at 6:43 in the first quarter, cutting the early deficit in half.
- Caitlyn Wurzburger scored twice in a 21-second span at the end of the first, including a goal at the buzzer to give the home team a 4-3 lead it would not relinquish.
- Reilly Casey scored back-to-back goals, the first off a free position 16 seconds into the second quarter, to spark a 7-1 run for Carolina.
- Wurzburger tallied two more in the second frame for a game-high four goals.
- Darcy Felter, who recorded her first career goal with a second left before the end of the half to give UNC an 11-4 lead at the break, also opened scoring for the Tar Heels in the third.
- With two apiece, Caroline Godine and Mackenzie Rich combined for all four of UNC's goals in the final quarter.
- Carolina's defense did not allow a Liberty goal from the 11:26 mark in the second quarter until 90 seconds remained in the third, allowing the Flames only one goal in each of the final three quarters.
- Carolina held a 28-22 advantage over Liberty in shots, including a 23-14 edge in shots on goal.
- UNC had 16 draw controls to Liberty's nine, with a team-high seven coming from Sophie Student for the second game in a row.
- Alecia Nicholas, the ACC Co-Defensive Player of the Week, made eight saves between the pipes.
- Julia Dorsey, Emily Nalls and Brooklyn Walker-Welch all had two ground balls to contribute to UNC's total of 11, just above Liberty's 10.
- With her three assists, Wurzburger now ranks eighth all-time in program history for career assists with 65.
- Nine of Carolina's 18 goals were scored by freshmen, including two each from Felter, Godine, Kaleigh Harden, and Mottice.
- Casey's five points on the day brings her season total to 11, surpassing the nine she accumulated during the entire 2022 season.
- The Tar Heels have now won 42 consecutive regular season games, tied as the third-longest streak in NCAA history.
- Carolina has now won 35 consecutive home games, the longest streak in program history.
- UNC has now scored double-figure goals for the 59th time in the last 61 games. It has also won 51 of their last 52 games, and 59 of their 61 games.
- Following today's win, head coach Jenny Levy is three wins away from reaching 400 career victories.
