February 18, 2023 | Women's Basketball
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The No. 19 North Carolina women's basketball team plays its final weekend home game of the regular season on Sunday, hosting Wake Forest for a 4 p.m. tipoff at Carmichael Arena.
UNC comes into the game at 18-8 overall and 9-6 in ACC play. Wake Forest is 14-12 (5-10 ACC).
After this, Carolina has just one home game left in the regular season, on Thursday at 8 p.m. against Virginia Tech.
UNC is celebrating Black History Month on Sunday, joining with the Carolina Black Caucus to recognize three honorees – including former player Camille Little – and wearing special shooting shirts during warmups.
Heels vs. Deacs
The Tar Heels and Demon Deacons are meeting for the 85th time in a series that dates back to the 1974-75 season, UNC's first as a varsity program under the umbrella of the University of North Carolina Department of Athletics. Carolina leads the series 66-18 after winning the most recent matchup, 78-59 in Winston-Salem on Feb. 3, 2022.
• In the most recent meeting, last season at Wake, six Tar Heels scored eight points or more each as Carolina won 78-59 to give coach Courtney Banghart her 300th career win. Alyssa Ustby turned in a double-double with 18 points (including five in the first 39 seconds of play) and 10 rebounds. Kennedy Todd-Williams scored 14 and Deja Kelly added 12.
• The last meeting at Carmichael was in 2020, as the teams split a pair of games within a 10-day span. On Dec. 10, the Demon Deacons won 57-54 in Winston-Salem, and on Dec. 20, the Tar Heels won 77-74 in overtime in Chapel Hill. In the homecourt win, Ustby scored 15 points, all after halftime, and Todd-Williams had 10 points and 10 rebounds for her first double-double in ACC play and second of her career.
• Three of the teams' last eight meetings have gone into OT, with UNC winning two of those.
• UNC has won the last two meetings at Carmichael. Wake's last win in Chapel Hill was in 2017, 80-77 on Jan. 19, 2017.
Noting the Tar Heels
• Redshirt freshman Kayla McPherson is the reigning ACC Rookie of the Week. She's the second UNC winner in the past three weeks – Paulina Paris was honored on Jan. 30. UNC is the only school to have two different players win rookie honors this season.
• While the Tar Heels had the same starting five for all 32 games last season, this year they've had seven different starting combinations so far. Kennedy Todd-Williams (also part of last year's five) is the only Tar Heels to start all 26 games this year.
More for Sunday
• It's a birthday celebration for Rameses, the Carolina mascot! The live ram mascot will be outside Carmichael prior to the game. Inside, the costumed ram mascot will host his mascot friends for a basketball game at halftime.
