Gymnastics Goes Undefeated In The EAGL With Win Over Temple

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The University of North Carolina gymnastics team posted a 195.825-194.950 win over Temple on Friday night at Carmichael Arena, officially becoming the East Atlantic Gymnastics League undefeated regular season champion for the second year in a row.
Following the win tonight, the Tar Heels finish league action at a perfect 6-0 while improving to 13-4 overall.
Carolina posted the highest score of the meet on three of four rotations, also winning or sharing the title on every event: Kaya Forbes on vault (9.875) and floor (9.850), Lali Dekanoidze on bars (9.900) and Julia Knower on beam (9.900).
Rotation One – Vault
Matching her career-high 9.875 on vault for the second time this season, Forbes won the event to lead a strong UNC showing. Placing second was Knower with a 9.825 while Dekanoidze and Paige Prejean tied for third at 9.775. Also scoring for the home team was Gwen Fink with the fourth-highest score of the meet at 9.750.
Carolina tallied a team score of 49.000 on its opening rotation while Temple totaled 48.500.
Rotation Two – Bars
Dekanoidze picked up her 11th individual win of the year on bars with a mark of 9.900, her sixth time this season at or above 9.900. UNC once again swept the podium as Elizabeth Culton tied her season-high 9.875 for second and Fink matched her career-high 9.850 for third. Also contributing were Knower (9.750) and Jamie Shearer (9.725).
Finishing with a collective 49.100, the Tar Heels again out-scored the Owls' 48.775.
Rotation Three – Beam
Knower dazzled with a meet-winning routine of 9.900 on beam, her highest score of the 2023 campaign. Taylor Schulze also set a season-high 9.825 for second overall, erasing her previous mark of 9.825. A trio of 9.800s from Culton, Hannah Nam and Hallie Thompson also counted.
Carolina put together one of its best performances on beam this year with a 49.125, once again ahead of Temple's 48.775.
Rotation Four – Floor
Forbes found herself on top of the podium for the second time of the meet after tying for first on floor with a score of 9.850. Bri Greenlow and Knower both had routines worthy of a 9.800 as Nam (9.625) and Amy Wozniak (9.525) also had scores that counted.
The Owls had the better team score of the pair on floor at 48.900, as the Tar Heels settled with a 48.600.

The Tar Heels return to Carmichael Arena for their final home meet of the season on Friday, March 4, at 6 p.m. ET against Air Force. Admission is free and open to the public, and the Senior Day celebration will take place following the conclusion of the meet.
