Quick Start Lifts No. 1 Women’s Lacrosse Over Virginia Tech, 10-6

BLACKSBURG, Va. – An early 6-0 run lifted the No. 1 University of North Carolina women's lacrosse team over Virginia Tech, 10-6, on Friday night at Thompson Field in Blacksburg, Va.
The Tar Heels begin Atlantic Coast Conference action at 1-0 while improving to 4-0 overall. The Hokies drop to 1-3 (0-1).

How it Happened
- Sophie Student, who transferred from Virginia Tech, tallied the first goal of the game at the 12:14 mark to spark a 6-0 run for UNC.
- Five of Carolina's 10 goals came in the first quarter, which included two from Marissa White.
- In her first appearance this season, Olivia Dirks scored 40 seconds into the second quarter to put the Tar Heels up 6-0.
- Carolina's defense did not allow a goal until five minutes into the second quarter, only giving up two goals during the first three quarters.
- A pair of goals from Caitlyn Wurzburger and one from Alyssa Long counted for all three Tar Heel goals in the third quarter.
- Wurzburger recorded a hat trick with 5:18 on the clock in the third to put UNC up 10-2, its largest lead of the game.
- Virginia Tech went on a 4-0 run during the final quarter, but Carolina hung on for the 10-6 victory.
- Seven of UNC's goals had an assist, with Reilly Casey totaling four.
- Leading the Hokies in nearly every category, the Tar Heels out-shot their opponent 35-24, including a 25-12 advantage in shots on goal.
- Student had a game-high four draw controls and Casey had a game-high-tying two ground balls.
- Carolina had 10 caused turnovers throughout the contest, with Emily Nalls and Kaleigh Harden each recording two.
- Alecia Nicholas finished with six saves between the pipes.
- The Tar Heels have now won 44 consecutive regular season games – the second longest streak in women's lacrosse history.
- UNC has now won 23 consecutive regular season ACC games and has gone 70-6 in its last 76 games against ACC opponents (regular season and postseason).
- Carolina has now won 19 consecutive road games (excluding neutral-site).
- UNC has now scored double-figure goals for the 61st time in the last 63 games. It has also won 53 of their last 54 games, and 61 of their 63 games.
- With 26 victories in a row, Carolina is now one win away from tying its program record for longest win streak (27, 2/8/20-5/28/21).
- With her three assists, Wurzburger is now nine away from being tied for seventh in UNC history for career assists at 77.
- Following today's win, head coach Jenny Levy is one win away from reaching 400 career victories.
