Men's Tennis Downs Miami, 4-2, On Senior Day
April 16, 2023 | Men's Tennis
CHAPEL HILL, N.C.—Freshman Will Jansen won the deciding singles match as No. 16 North Carolina beat No. 47 Miami, 4-2, in men's tennis on Sunday afternoon at the Chewning Tennis Center.
With the victory, the Tar Heels (17-7, 9-3 Atlantic Coast Conference) clinched the No. 4 seed in next weekend's ACC Championship and a bye to Friday's quarterfinal round in nearby Cary, N.C.
UNC will play on Friday at 3:30 p.m. against the winner of No. 5 seed Florida State, No. 12 seed Clemson and No. 13 seed Boston College.
Sunday marked the final regular season home matches for a quartet of Tar Heels: graduate students Brian Cernoch and Ryan Seggerman and seniors Mark Dillon and Henry Lieberman.
"How much did our seniors step up," head coach Sam Paul said afterward. "On number two doubles, Brian [Cernoch] steps up, hits a big shot on match point, on a deuce point. That set the tone for the match. Ryan Seggerman was struggling a little bit early in his match but put it together in the third [set], and then Will [Jansen] gets his thing done to clinch it. Karl Poling had a big win for us as well.
"That was a tough match, Miami's got a tough team. A very, very tough team. They are under-ranked and deserve an NCAA Tournament bid. We wish them good luck in the ACC Tournament, because they gave us everything we could handle all the way up and down the line."
The Tar Heels took the doubles point to grab a 1-0 lead. Jansen and Karl Poling beat Antonio Prat and Martin Katz, 6-4, at No. 3 to get things started, and Cernoch and Benjamin Kittay downed Franco Aubone and Dan Martin, 6-4 at No. 2.
Miami tied the score at 1-all when the 52nd-ranked Martin beat No. 45 Cernoch, 6-1 and 6-4 at No. 1 singles. The Hurricanes took a brief, 2-1 lead when Nacho Serra Sanchez beat Chris Li, 6-4, 6-2, at No. 5.
The Tar Heels then clawed back and won two consecutive singles matches to retake the lead at 3-2. Seggerman, ranked, No. 43 this week by the ITA, came from down a set to beat No. 87 Katz in three sets at No. 2, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2.
Jansen won the clincher at No. 3 singles, outlasting Prat by a score of 6-1, 6-7 (8-10) and 6-3.
