Women's Lacrosse Topples Tigers, 16-6, In ACC Quarterfinals

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Third-seed University of North Carolina women's lacrosse took care of business Wednesday night in the quarterfinals of the 2023 ACC Championship presented by Ally, defeating sixth-seed Clemson, 16-6, at American Legion Memorial Stadium.
The Tar Heels, ranked sixth nationally, improve to 13-3 overall on the year and 14-0 all-time in the ACC Quarterfinals.
Following the win, UNC extended its longest win streak in ACC Tournament history with 19 straight victories.
How It Happened
Third-seed North Carolina returns to American Legion Memorial Stadium on Friday, April 28, for the ACC Semifinals to face second-seed Syracuse. First draw is set for 3:30 p.m. ET and the game will be broadcast on ACC Network.

How It Happened
- It was a slow start offensively for both teams, as the game was tied at one apiece after the opening frame.
- Carolina exploded at the start of the second, scoring four goals in a three-minute span behind two from Lauren Figura.
- After jumping out to a 6-0 run at the beginning, the Tar Heels out-scored the Tigers, 7-1, in the second frame.
- Nicole Humphrey scored her second with five seconds left in the half, giving Carolina an 8-2 advantage heading into the break.
- A tally from Caroline Godine at the halfway point of the third was the first of four unanswered for the Tar Heels.
- Humphrey made it a hat trick with 1:40 left on the clock before Mackenzie Rich added a goal of her own, putting the Tar Heels up 13-4 after the third.
- Godine got a hat trick halfway into the final quarter before Marissa White sealed the 16-6 win less than a minute later.
- Carolina fired off 37 shots to Clemson's 16, also holding a 27-10 edge in shots on goal.
- UNC led 16-10 in draw controls, with a game-high five each from Olivia Dirks and Kaleigh Harden.
- The Tar Heels had 10 caused turnovers while the Tigers had just four. Emily Nalls had a career- and game-high four.
- UNC also had a 16-8 lead in ground balls behind Ellie Traggio's career- and game-high four.
- Alecia Nicholas made four saves between the pipes.
- Nine different players scored for UNC, compared to five for CU.
- Humphrey's hat trick was the fifth of her career, and her third in the last four games.
- Godine's hat trick marked the fourth of the freshman's young career.
- White leads the team with 37 goals and is the only Tar Heel who has scored in every game this season.
- After dishing out one today, Reilly Casey is one assist away from cracking into UNC's all-time single season list.
- With one goal today, Caitlyn Wurzburger is now 14 points away from 200 in her career.
- The Tar Heels have scored double-figure goals 72 times in their last 75 games.
- UNC has won 62 of its last 66 games, and 70 of its last 75 games.
