Diamond Heels Fall To Clemson In Series Finale
May 20, 2023 | Baseball
CLEMSON, S.C. – Caden Grice hit a two-run homer and pitched 7 1/3 innings to lead No. 7 Clemson to a 3-1 victory over North Carolina Saturday at Doug Kingmore Stadium, completing the regular season for both teams.
Freshman Cam Cannarella collected three hits, and senior Riley Bertram had two for the Tigers.
Grice hit a two-run, two-out home run on a 1-2 pitch from UNC starter Dalton Pence in the first to provide all the offense the Tigers needed.
Clemson added an insurance run in the eighth after Billy Amick, and Bertram hit back-to-back doubles to right.
Grice (7-1) allowed one run on four hits with nine strikeouts before exiting with one out in the eighth. He retired 11 in a row after a leadoff walk to Casey Cook and took a no-hitter into the fourth inning.
Tomas Frick broke up the no-hitter with a two-out single in the fourth.
The Tar Heels got two more hits off the left-hander in the fifth but didn't push a run across until the sixth.
Mac Horvath led off the inning with a double, moved to third on a passed ball, and scored on Frick's sacrifice fly.
The two-base knock was Horvath's 20th of the season, which made him the first ACC player since 1999 to hit 20 home runs, 20 doubles, and steal 20 bases in the same season.
Frick finished 2-for-4 with a double and RBI.
Pence (4-2) took the loss, allowing two runs on three hits in 2 1/3 innings.
North Carolina will return to action at the 2023 ACC Baseball Championship, which begins Tuesday, May 23, at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park. The pools for the tournament will be announced later.
