CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -– The UNC women's basketball team just might view bus trips a bit differently this season.
Over the summer, the Tar Heel players, coaches and staff all read "The Energy Bus," by Jon Gordon. Subtitled "10 Rules to Fuel Your Life, Work and Team with Positive Energy," the book hammers home the impact that attitude and perspective have on day-to-day life.
Here are some takeaways players shared from the read:
Senior Alyssa Ustby: "My biggest takeaway from the Energy Bus is that life is a test. There's going to be so many instances of adversity, facing challenges, and it's up to you to shift your perspectives and find the positives that you can learn from it and take it with you."
Senior Alexandra Zelaya: "My main takeaway from the Energy bus was Rule No. 1, that you are the driver of your own bus. It's a great reminder that you have a lot more control than you think in your life and the decisions that you make."
Redshirt sophomore Teonni Key: "My takeaway from the Energy bus is, 'invite people on your bus and share your vision for the road ahead.' I feel this really embodies the idea that having a group of peope around you who share the same vision and goals with you will help you get farther than you could ever imagine."
Graduate student Lexi Donarski: "My biggest takeaway from the Energy Bus is that everything happens for a reason and it's truly up to you to decide how you want to react and respond."
Senior Anya Poole: "My biggest takeaway form the Energy Bus is, 'don't waste your energy on those who don't get on your bus.' Wise words from Ciera: you can bring a horse to water but you can't force it to drink. Don't worry about the people who don't want to get on your bus, just enjoy the time with people who ARE on your bus."
As the Tar Heels take many literal bus rides together during the coming season, they'll think back on the literary ride they took together over the summer.
