Season Opener History
• The Tar Heels are 46-20 all-time in season openers, including an active 25-season opener win streak dating back to 1999.
• The season opener streak is the second longest in the country, behind Maryland's 31-game streak.
• A year ago, the Tar Heels defeated Mercer, 25-3, at Dorrance Field in Chapel Hill.
Series History
• Carolina is 6-0 all-time against Mercer, including a 2-0 mark in neutral site clashes.
• The Tar Heels and Bears also met in Atlanta in 2012 and 2019, a combined 40-16 score in favor of Carolina.
• Last spring, Logan McGovern paced the Tar Heel offense with six points (four goals, two assists), with six different players also adding two scores.
• Andrew Tyeryar finished the game 13-18 (.722) at faceoff, with Collin Krieg stopping 10 shots between the pipes.
New Faces On The Staff
• This summer, Jon Thompson (offensive coordinator) and Dave Pietramala (defensive coordinator) joined the coaching staff in Chapel Hill, with Peter Murphy named the program's director of operations.
• Thompson joined the Tar Heels after spending the past three seasons as the offensive coordinator at Air Force, previously spending 10 seasons as the head coach at Amherst and two at Colby.
• Longtime Johns Hopkins head coach (2001- 2020), Pietramala spent the past two seasons as the defensive coordinator at Syracuse.
Final Year In Chapel Hill
• Alex Breschi, Ryan O'Leary, Will Pettit, Lance Tillman, Andrew Tyeryar and PJ Zinsner enter their fifth season in Chapel Hill.
• Additionally, graduate students Andrew Geppert, Hartley Jordan, Logan McGovern, Nick Morgan, Brody Rule, Danny Striano and Harry Wellford enter their final year of college eligibility.
• In total, the 13 graduate students on the 2024 roster have a combined 513 collegiate games played in their careers, entering the campaign.
Returning Production for 2024
• According to Lacrosse Reference, the Tar Heels return the following this season from the 2023 roster:
- Goals: 76.1%
- Assists: 73.6%
- Points: 75.2%
- Faceoff Production: 80.6%
