March 4, 2024 | Men's Golf
Tar Heel junior David Ford is one of 15 players to watch for the 2024 Haskins Award, which is presented annually to the top collegiate men's golfer.
The Peachtree Corners, Ga., native is the No. 3 player in the World Amateur Golf Rankings and is ranked No. 6 in college golf.
Ford is averaging 69.80 strokes per round for the No. 2-ranked Tar Heels. He won his second individual collegiate title in October at the Williams Cup and has four top-five finishes in six tournaments this season.
This week, Ford will compete in the PGA Tour's Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill in Orlando, Fla. Last June, Ford competed for the United States team that won the Palmer Cup. He was selected by his teammates to play in the PGA event. Beginning in 2017, the winning team in the Palmer Cup has voted for one individual to receive an exemption to play in the Arnold Palmer Invitational based on the teammate who best represents the legacy and values of the golf legend.
Previous exemptions were extended to notable players Ludvig Aberg, Sam Bennett and Collin Morikawa.
Ford also played on winning U.S. teams in the Walker Cup and World Amateur Team Championships last fall.
He was the ACC Player of the Year and a first-team All-America in 2023.
The Haskins Award is in its 54th year, and is voted on by collegiate players, coaches and media. Aberg won the 2023 award while playing at Texas Tech.
John Inman won the award in 1984 when the Tar Heel also won the NCAA championship.
