March 9, 2024 | Track & Field
The UNC men's track team showcased a historic performance at the NCAA Indoor Championships in Boston, Massachusetts. They secured the highest team points in the history of the indoor championships, 26 points, and tied for their highest team finish of 5th place.
Carolina achieved their first top-10 finish since 1993, UNC reaffirmed its status as a competitive force in collegiate track and field, standing as the sole ACC team in the top 10.
Parker Wolfe led the team with notable accomplishments, and earned silver medals in both the 5,000m and 3,000m. He is the first Tar Heel to medal in two different events at the NCAA Indoor Championship in the same year. Wolfe is one of two Tar Heels to have top-five finishes in the same indoor championship; the other is Reggie Harris, who finished second in the 400m and fourth in the 200m in 1992. He also earned All-American honors in both the 5000m and 3000m events, his seventh First Team All-American finish in less than three years.
Ethan Strand's fourth-place finish in the mile event with a time of 4:02.44. Strands' All-American performance marked the Tar Heel's first top-five finish in the mile event since Ralph King in 1976.
On Friday, The Tar Heel distance medley relay (DMR) team, consisting of Aiden Neal, Andrew Regnier, Kyle Reinheimer, and Jake Gebhardt, finished fourth with a time of 9:27.96, earning them First Team All-American status. This marks the third time in four years that the Tar Heels' DMR team has earned All-American honors, showcasing their strength as a collective force on the track.
Alex Phillip, a graduate transfer from DIII John Carroll, finished 12th in the 5000m event, securing second-team All-American status.
This marked the end of a historic indoor season.
