Honeycutt Has Two Home Runs But Baseball Falls At UVA
April 5, 2024 | Baseball
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Ethan Anderson homered twice, leading No. 15 Virginia over No. 10 North Carolina 7-2 on Friday despite Vance Honeycutt's two home runs.
Harrison Didawick hit a three-run homer in the first inning for the Cavaliers (25-6, 9-5 ACC), who won their fifth straight game against UNC (25-6, 10-4 ACC) at Disharoon Park.
Honeycutt tied former teammate Mac Horvath for third-place on the Tar Heels' all-time home run list with 47, 10 shy of matching the program record.
Virginia starter Ethan Blanco (3-1) scattered six hits over 6 1/3 innings and struck out seven. He only allowed multiple base runners just once, in the seventh, but struck out Alex Madera and induced a ground ball out to escape unscathed.
UNC starter Jason DeCaro (1-1) matched Blanco inning-for-inning after the first. He threw five consecutive scoreless frames and only gave up three hits during those frames. DeCaro allowed five runs, six hits, and three walks with five strikeouts in six innings pitched.
Honeycutt homered to lead off the third and cut the margin to one with his second homer of the game in the sixth.
Anderson pushed Virginia's lead back to two with a homer to lead off the seventh, and Casey Saucke delivered a two-run single to stretch it to 6-2.
Anderson homered again to start the eighth.
Owen Coady struck three in 2.2 innings to earn his first save.
The series concludes Saturday at 1 p.m. at Disharoon Park. Junior left-hander Shea Sprague will take the mound for UNC and will be opposed by sophomore right-hander Kevin Jaxel.
