Men's Golf Wins Augusta Haskins, Sixth Title This Season
April 7, 2024 | Men's Golf
Peter Fountain and David Ford combined to shoot 5 under par in the final round to lead top-ranked North Carolina to its sixth team championship of the season with a six-stroke victory at Forest Hills Golf Club in the Augusta Haskins Award Invitational.
The six wins are the most by UNC men's golf since winning six times in 1984-85. UNC has won 11 titles in the last two seasons, which equals the school-record for combined wins in back-to-back seasons (11 in 1982-83/1983-84).
Carolina shot 281-279-283 for a 54-hole total of 21-under 843. Texas was second at 15-under 849, Oklahoma State was third at 13 under, Illinois was fourth at 8 under and Augusta was fifth at 7 under.
Fountain shot 3-under 69 to tie for third place in the individual standings. The senior from Raleigh shot 74-67-69 for 6-under 210. His third-place finish was his best this season in a full-field tournament (placed third in the four-team St Andrews Links Collegiate in October) and his best since a second-place finish following a playoff in the 2022 ACC Championship.
David Ford (71-70-70) and Dylan Menante (68-71-72) tied for seventh at 5-under 211. Austin Greaser (72-71-72) tied for 17th at 1-under 215 and Maxwell Ford (70-76-72) tied for 30th at 2-over 218.
David Ford recorded his 19th career top-10 finish in 33 starts and Menante finished in the top 10 for the 25th time.
The Tar Heels' six tournament titles this season include the Olympia Fields Fighting Illini Invitational, the Williams Cup, East Lake Cup, Amer Ari Invitational, John Hayt Collegiate Invitational and the Augusta Haskins Award Invitational.
Mercer's Tobias Jonsson (71-68-68) was the medalist at 9-under 207.
Carolina has win 21 team titles in Andrew DiBitetto's seven seasons as head coach.
