Five Alumnae Invited To USA Sixes Training Camp
June 10, 2024 | Women's Lacrosse
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Five of the 24 players invited to a training camp at USA Lacrosse Headquarters this week in Sparks, Maryland, for the U.S. sixes team are former Tar Heel standouts. The camp, which will be held June 10-12, is part of USA Lacrosse's build up to the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles.
The Tar Heels invited to the training camp are Ally Mastroianni, current assistant coach Marie McCool '18, Taylor Moreno '21, Caylee Waters '17 and Kayla Wood '21.
Four of the 24 invitees are reigning gold medalists from the 2022 World Lacrosse Championships – three of which are Tar Heels. Mastroianni, McCool and Waters were crowned world champions under former national team head coach Jenny Levy two years ago in Towson, Maryland. McCool was named to the 2022 All-World Team.
This will be the only training camp for the sixes team before a camp just ahead of the inaugural USA Lacrosse Experience in Indianapolis from October 11-12. The U.S. sixes team will play against international competition during that event.
The U.S. has only competed in international competition in sixes on three previous occasions. In 2021, USA Lacrosse hosted a three-team Super Sixes event with Canada and the Haudenosaunee. The U.S. and Canada each went 3-1 at the round-robin event.
In 2022, Canada defeated Team USA, 14-12, in the gold medal game at The World Games. Last fall, the U.S. beat Canada, 8-7, in the championship game of the Super Sixes event in Ontario.
