Inaugural U.S. Box National Team Features Six Tar Heels
August 29, 2024 | Women's Lacrosse
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Six former North Carolina women's lacrosse standouts have been named to the inaugural United States Box Lacrosse National Team, as announced by USA Lacrosse on Thursday afternoon following over a year of player ID and training camps.
The six Tar Heels named to the 23-player roster include Kristen Carr ('10), Ally Mastroianni ('21), Taylor Moreno ('22), Melissa Sconone ('23), Caroline Wakefield ('21) and Kayla Wood ('21).
No other school has more than two former student-athletes represented on the team. All six Tar Heels were named to the initial box lacrosse training team back in June.
The U.S. Box Lacrosse National Team will compete at the World Lacrosse Box Championships in Utica, New York, from Sept. 20-29. It will mark the first time World Lacrosse has hosted a women's box world championship with the U.S. being one of 10 nations vying for gold.
Seven members of the stars and stripes have previously medaled with the United States in major international competitions, including two Tar Heels. Mastroianni won the world championship in 2022. Carr won back-to-back golds at the world championship in 2013 and 2017 as well as at The World Games in 2017.
USA Lacrosse held three player ID camps from May through August 2023 to begin the player evaluation process. From there, selected athletes were invited to training camps in Utica – the site of the 2024 championships – in Fall 2023 to prepare for international competition, followed by two more camps in Summer 2024.
The 23-player squad includes 20 runners and three goalies. Moreno will be in cage while Carr and Wakefield will also be on the defense. Sconone will play at forward with Mastroianni and Wood in transition.
Box lacrosse, also known as indoor lacrosse, is characterized by tight spaces, fast pace and quick decision making. Played inside the confines of a multi-sport rink, box lacrosse has a distinct set of rules apart from the field game. The playing surface is enclosed by boards, usually made of wood or plastic, and each team has six players on the floor – five runners and one goaltender. Players rotate on and off the floor in shifts.
