Track Sets Meet Record In Shot Put; 1500m Sets Two New Top-10 Marks

DURHAM, N.C. - North Carolina track and field found success on day two of the Duke Invitational with two top-ten marks and a meet record.
On her third throw of the women's discus, McKynzie Mauney advanced to the finals with a season-best mark of 45.60m, which was also her best throw of the day as Mauney took fifth.
After the first flight of the men's discus and the start of the men's high jump, it poured, and the rain continued to fall for the next hour. The weather impacted the high jump, as no jumpers cleared a bar after the rain. The water reached the athletes' ankles. McKinley Thompson (1.91m) finished in second and Sam Corley (1.86m) took foruth.
After winning his heat, Blaise Atkinson (14.22) qualified for Saturday's finals in the 100m hurdles.
For the second time in as many meets, Tommy Kitchell (19.39m) has thrown a meet record in the men's shot put. Kitchell threw his second meet record of the season after throwing the first meet record at the VertKlasse Meeting six days ago. All four Tar Heel throwers advanced to the finals.
Makayla Paige (4:14.45) returned to the track for the first time since winning the indoor national championship in the 800m. Paige moved into sixth all-time in the 1500m as she finished in second. Sydney Masciarelli (4:17.09) moved into ninth all-time as she took sixth.
