Diamond Heels Crush Campbell
May 6, 2025 | Baseball
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Fresh off a rare weekend away, Carolina baseball returned to the diamond with a dominant 10-1 win over Campbell on Tuesday night in Boshamer Stadium.
The Tar Heels (36-10, 15-9 ACC) rolled to their third straight game in double figures thanks in large part to a highly productive day from the bottom of the order. Alex Madera, Rom Kellis V, and Carter French in the seven, eight and nine holes combined for six hits, six RBIs, and three runs scored.
It was the best day of Kellis V's career in Carolina blue by far, as the junior college transfer went way down in the zone to launch his first home run of the year in the sixth inning. The 351 foot, 34 degree launch angle moon ball scored two to make it 5-1 Heels.
Madera followed one inning later to put the game to bed for good with a bases-clearing double to left center. Kellis V brought him in and scored himself to get UNC to the 10-1 final score.
Carolina first got on the scoreboard in the third when Madera singled and eventually came around on a Campbell error. Jackson Van De Brake logged his team-high 13th double of the season in the next at-bat to bring score another.
Luke Stevenson, the ACC leader in walks, added the Tar Heels' third of the evening on a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch in the fifth. Kane Kepley would add an HBP of his own in this game, putting him at 22 on the year and all alone with the second most in a season by a Tar Heel this century.
The men on the mound were no less effective than their batting counterparts on Tuesday night. Led by sophomore Jason DeCaro, making his first midweek start since February 2024, the Carolina arms combined to strikeout 11 Fighting Camels while giving up zero walks.
It is the second time this year UNC has logged double-digit punchouts without a walk on the card. The team hadn't had more than one such game in a single season since 2021, when it did so on three occasions.
Ryan Lynch, Camron Seagraves, and Cale Bolton threw 4.0 innings of work in relief and did not allow a single baserunner between them.
The Tar Heels host their final regular season home series this upcoming weekend against rivals NC State. First pitch for game one will be at 6 p.m. ET on Thursday, May 8 with coverage streaming live on ACCNX. Limited tickets are still available.
