Tim Taylor serves as an assistant coach for the Tar Heels, bringing to Chapel Hill his vast experience working in the Atlantic Coast Conference.

Taylor enjoyed three separate stints on staff at the University of Virginia. He spent time on Debbie Ryan's staff from 2000-05 as the recruiting coordinator, and as Ryan's associate head coach from 2009-12. Taylor also worked on Joanne Boyle's staff as an assistant coach with the Cavaliers during the 2016-17 and 2017-18 seasons.

More recently, Taylor has coached within the Team Loaded basketball program in Virginia from 2015-19. This organization has produced numerous collegiate players, including Carolina men's basketball player Armando Bacot.

"Tim brings a wealth of experience in so many areas to this program," UNC coach Courtney Banghart said upon Taylor's hiring. "He has deep roots in the ACC, having spent many years on the sideline at Virginia. He has been responsible for the on court development of both the post and guard positions and has had oversight of both the offensive and defensive side of the ball.

"Tim is one of the more respected men in the game. He builds meaningful and lasting relationships as a recruiter and a coach, and he is motivated by the challenge and opportunity to win at the highest level here. Building a staff is like building a team. You find the best pieces, whom are strong on their own and better together. Tim is the perfect fit for this program. We are thrilled to welcome him and his family to Carolina."

During his time with Ryan, Taylor was recognized as one of the top assistant coaches in the country by earning an invite to the prestigious Nike Villa 7 program. The Cavaliers made five NCAA tournament appearances and signed back-to-back top-15 recruiting classes. Taylor coached Monica Wright during the 2010 season when she was named the ACC Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year, while also garnering AP and State Farm All-America honors.

Taylor returned to UVA for a third stint in 2016 and helped guide the 2018 Cavaliers to their first NCAA Tournament berth since 2010.

Prior to his first stint at Virginia, Taylor served as recruiting coordinator for the Furman women's basketball program from 1998-2000. The Paladins won the 2000 Southern Conference Tournament.

Taylor was principal at William Wetsel Middle School in Madison, Va., from 2012-16. He led an impressive school-wide turnaround in moving the school out of improvement to full accreditation. He developed a remediation program that increased state test scores across all subjects by at least 20% with an incredible 60% increase in math scores over four years. Taylor also created a Google Educator professional development plan that became a national model for Google.

He also served as assistant boys' coach at United Christian Academy from 2012-16. Taylor led the team to a 45-6 record during his time on the sideline with two state appearances and a regional championship in 2014.

In a previous high school coaching tenure, Taylor helped lead Orange County to a school-record 25-straight wins and its first-ever state tournament appearance in 2005-2006. He also led Madison County to a school-record 28-straight wins, District and Regional Championships in 2008-09 and a state tournament final four berth. His overall head coaching record is 134-44.

Taylor, who was born in Charlottesville, Va., received a B.S. in political science and an M.S. in educational administration from James Madison. He is married to the former Tonya Daughtry, and the couple has three children, a daughter Jordan and sons Dalton and Jackson. Jordan attends Alabama, while Dalton is at Virginia Tech.
