Carolina field hockey is well-represented in the Atlantic Coast Conference's 1999 honors, announced over the weekend.
North Carolina freshman Meredith Keller, a midfielder from Greenville, Del., was named ACC Rookie of the Year. Keller, who has started all 20 games for the Tar Heels, is the first UNC player to win Rookie of the Year honors since Kate Barber clamed the award in 1994.
Junior Jana Toepel, a back from Perkiomenville, Pa., earned All-ACC and ACC All-Tournament honors for the second consecutive year. A team captain, Toepel has seven goals on the season.
She was joined on both teams by junior forward Kristen McCann, who also earned All-ACC honors in 1998. McCann is the team's leading scorer with 14 goals and 31 points.
Sophomore Carrie Lingo, a midfielder from Rehoboth, Del., earned her first spot on the All-ACC team. Lingo, in her first season of play for UNC after missing last year with a knee injury, has started all 20 games and scored five goals.
The Tar Heels, 15-5 on the season, are awaiting Wednesday's announcement of the 1999 NCAA Tournament bracket.
