Tar Heels Top Virginia, 3-0
June 21, 1999 | Field Hockey
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The University of North Carolina field hockey team beat top-ranked Virginia 3-0 Sunday afternoon to improve to 5-1 and get back in the winner's column after Saturday's loss to Old Dominion.
"We were upset with ourselves after yesterday's game because we knew we could play better," senior midfielder Stacey Schweighart said. "We wanted to come out and redeem ourselves."
Less than 24 hours after the end of Saturday's 4-3 loss to No. 3 Old Dominion, the Tar Heels set out to get a win at Navy Field. They went up 1-0 in the first half on a goal off a penalty corner by sophomore Jana Toepel, assisted by sophomore Erin Cox and freshman Abbey Woolley. In the second half, sophomore Kristen McCann scored two unassisted goals, one with 23:37 left in the game on her own rebound and another with 11:28 remaining. The shutout was the third of the season for junior goalkeeper Nicole Frey, who totaled nine saves and played a game that UNC coach Karen Shelton termed "outstanding."
"I'm very proud of the team for seizing the opportunity to demonstrate that we're a solid team," Shelton said. "I think we looked a little tired in the second half but we gutted it out. That says a lot about a team. This game will help us in terms of confidence." North Carolina will host Duke Saturday at 1 p.m. at Navy Field. Virginia, now 6-1, plays at James Madison on Wednesday.
