Field Hockey Trio Nabs Academic Honors

CHAPEL HILL -- Three players from the North Carolina field hockey team have earned spots on the 1998 NFHCA (National Field Hockey Coaches Association) Division I National Academic Squad. To earn a spot on the team, players must carry a grade point average of 3.3 or better and either start or act as a key reserve.
Holly Huff, a sophomore English major from St. Louis, has a 3.75 GPA and played in all 21 games for the Tar Heels this season. She scored one goal and added four assists. Kate Sidebottom, a sophomore history major from Lancaster, Pa., carries a 3.64 GPA and played in 13 games. She started three times and scored two goals.
Jana Toepel, a sophomore business major from Perkiomenville, Pa., carries a 3.60 GPA and started all 21 games for the Tar Heels. She ranked second on the team in scoring (12 goals, six assists for a total of 30 points) and led the team's defense from her position at back. Toepel has been named to the All-ACC and All-ACC Tournament teams and is a candidate for All-America honors.
The Tar Heels reached the NCAA second round before losing to Old Dominion 7-2 last Sunday. They finished the 1998 season with a record of 13-8.
