Field Hockey Beats Iowa
June 21, 1999 | Field Hockey
ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The fourth-ranked North Carolina field hockey team beat No. 20 Iowa 2-1 on Monday and will carry a 2-0 record home from the ACC/Big Ten Challenge. Carolina senior Nancy Pelligreen scored off a corner on the final play of regulation to win the game for the Tar Heels. In the team's first two games, Pelligreen, a St. Louis native, accounted for two goals and an assist for a total of five points.
As opposed to the 3-0 win over fifth-ranked Penn State on Saturday, the Tar Heels had to work a bit harder for this Labor Day victory over the Hawkeyes. Iowa's Sonia Steffler scored first on a corner rebound less than three minutes into the game but UNC freshman Katie McDonald's first career goal, on an assist by Kristen McCann, tied the score before halftime. Carolina outshot Iowa 17-6 and also led 10-6 on penalty corners. Tar Heel goalkeeper Nicole Frey recorded two saves.
"It was a very good weekend," UNC coach Karen Shelton said. "We played tough competition and were able to win both games." The most unfortunate part of the trip for the Tar Heels? The team attended the St. Louis Cardinals game on Sunday and missed seeing Mark McGwire's historic No. 61 by just one day.
North Carolina's winning streak now sits at 12 games, dating back to last October. The Tar Heels travel to Philadelphia this weekend to participate in the Temple Invitational. They'll face a third-straight Big Ten team in Michigan State on Saturday and either Temple or Radford on Sunday.
