Tar Heels Bow Out of ACC Tournament

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The North Carolina field hockey team lost to Maryland 2-1 on penalty strokes in ACC Tournament play Friday. Carolina's goal came on a penalty stroke by freshman Abby Martin with 30:02 remaining in the first half of the game. Maryland's Rachel Hiskins scored on an assist from Caroline Walter 31 seconds before halftime to tie the score.
North Carolina had five shots on goal and five corners in the second half and Maryland had two shots and one corner, but neither team managed to score. After two scoreless overtime periods, Maryland made four of its five penalty stokes while Carolina made only three.
For the game, both teams had 14 shots on goal. UNC totalled seven penalty corners and Maryland had 11, including six in the overtime periods. The Tar Heels will now prepare for NCAA Tournament play, which begins on Saturday. NCAA bids and site assignments will be announced on Wednesday.
