UNC to Host Weekend of Field Hockey Competition

CHAPEL HILL, N.C.-The University of North Carolina will play host this weekend to the United Airlines Field Hockey League, an elite-level competition run by the U.S. Field Hockey Association. The league will open its second season with games June 5 and 6 at Francis E. Henry Stadium.
Six teams, composed of a wide age-range of players, will each play two games on Saturday and one on Sunday. Play will run from 9 a.m. to approximately 9 p.m. on Saturday and from 8 a.m. to approximately 2 p.m. on Sunday. Games are open to the public and admission is free.
Among those participating are six 1996 Olympians, 14 collegiate All-Americans and 17 high school All-Americans. UNC's Karen Shelton will coach a team, Southern Charm, that includes seven current Tar Heels and three Carolina alums. A total of 13 UNC players, including incoming freshmen Meredith Keller and Ali Stewart, are participating in the league.
Following this weekend's games, the teams will compete in Springfield, Mass., on June 19 and 20 and convene in College Park, Md., July 3 for the league championship game.
