CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- University of North Carolina field hockey standouts Nancy Pelligreen and Jana Toepel have been named to the Division I All-America first team, announced today by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association.
Pelligreen, a senior forward, led the Tar Heels in scoring this season with 18 goals and eight assists for a total of 44 points. She made her fourth appearance on the All-ACC team this season and was also named All-ACC Tournament. A four-year starter for the Tar Heels, Pelligreen finished her UNC career second on North Carolina's alltime points and goals lists. "Nancy has provided tremendous leadership over the last four seasons," coach Karen Shelton says. "Her stick skills have improved every year to the point that she's one of the best in the country. She has a bright future with the national team."
Toepel, a sophomore back, led the Tar Heels' young defense this season and also finished second in scoring with 12 goals and six assists for 30 points. She was also named to the All-ACC and All-ACC Tournament teams. "Jana is the backbone of our defense," Shelton says. "She's a great communicator, a great leader. We're thrilled to have her back for two more years."
The Tar Heels finished 13-8 this season and reached the second round of the NCAA tournament before falling to eventual national champion Old Dominion.
