Men's Swimmers Complete Home Season by Sweeping Maryland, VPI

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The 14th-ranked and six-time defending Atlantic Coast Conference champion North Carolina men's swimming and diving completed its 1998-99 home dual-meet season in style Saturday afternoon, sweeping to two easy wins at the Maurice J. Koury Natatorium.
Meanwhile, the Tar Heel women, ranked 18th nationally, split on Saturday afternoon, losing to Maryland by one point and beating Virginia Tech.
In the men's meet, the Tar Heels defeated the Terrapins 188-105 and the Hokies 234.5-64.5. In addition, the Terps men's team defeated the Hokies 208-89. UNC improved to 9-2 overall on the season and 3-1 in the ACC. Maryland fell to 8-2 overall and 1-2 in the ACC. VPI is now 3-8 on the season.
In the women's meet, Maryland defeated UNC by a 150-149 margin, while the Tar Heels defeated the Hokies of VPI 207-92. The Maryland women swamped the Hokies 200-99. Maryland's women remained undefeated on the season, improving to 9-0 overall and 3-0 in the ACC. The Carolina women are now 6-4-1 overall and 1-3 in the ACC. Virginia Tech's women fell to 5-5 overall this season.
Senior Ted Brisson turned into a tremendous final performance in Koury Natatorium, winning three freestyle events at 50, 100 and 200 yards in length. Freshman Chris Helin also helped pace the Tar Heel men to the victory by winning three individual events on the afternoonthe 100-yard breaststroke, the 200-yard breaststroke and the 400-yard individual medley. Carolina senior Chris Jennings also won two events for UNCthe 100-yard backstroke and 100-yard butterfly.
Three different Tar Heel women's swimmers won two individual events in the meet. Junior Erika Acuff won the 200-yard butterly and the 400-yard individual medley, freshman Molly Sullivan won the 500-yard freestyle and 1000-yard freestyle and freshman Heather Stiles won the 100-yard backstroke and the 200-yard backstroke.
The meet was the final home appearance for 16 Tar Heel seniors swimming in their last home meet at Koury Natatorium. This contingent included seven UNC men's swimmers and eight UNC women's swimmer and one UNC women's diver.
Carolina will conclude its dual-meet season next Friday at North Carolina State in Raleigh. The men's meet will be at 5 p.m. and the women's meet will be at 7:30 p.m.
