CHAPEL HILL--North Carolina, winner of the last three NCAA championships, moved up to No. 1 in this week's STX/National Field Hockey Coaches Association Division I national poll. The Tar Heels, who lost six starters from last year's team, began the season ranked fourth and moved up to second in the Sept. 22 poll.
"We have been winning but it hasn't always been pretty," Carolina coach Karen Shelton said. "In some of our games we've been fortunate to win. We view the No. 1 ranking as a great compliment."
The 9-1 Tar Heels won three games (3-2 over Duke, 3-0 over Wake Forest and 8-0 over Richmond) last week preceding their elevation to No. 1.
This weekend Carolina travels to play two of the other teams in the national poll. The Tar Heels play at No. 14 James Madison in Harrisonburg, Va., on Friday and at No. 9 Maryland in College Park, Md., on Sunday. The game at Maryland will count toward the Atlantic Coast Conference standings.
