DURHAM, N.C. - The North Carolina field hockey team beat Duke 3-2 in Durham Wednesday evening to improve to 7-1 on the season. Freshmen Abby Martin and Abbey Woolley and sophomore Jana Toepel scored for the Tar Heels.
Carolina's first goal came on a penalty stroke by Martin with 2:37 remaining in the first half. After Duke's Corey Ceccolini scored twice early in the second half to give her team a 2-1 lead, Woolley scored on a penalty corner with 26:05 remaining. Toepel scored the winning goal on an assist from Nancy Pelligreen with 15 minutes to play. "We had our down moments but we pulled it out when we had to," Toepel said.
The win was Carolina's 40th straight over the Blue Devils and the Tar Heels are now 1-0 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. "I'm very pleased with the win," UNC coach Karen Shelton said. "To come over here and beat a very good Duke team that played with a lot of heart is an important victory for us."
