Field Hockey Players Garner Regional All-American Honors

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Five North Carolina field hockey players have earned spots on the AstroTurf/National Field Hockey Coaches Association Division I Regional All-America teams.
Named to the first team were senior forward Nancy Pelligreen and sophomore back Jana Toepel. Pelligreen, an All-America in each of her three previous seasons at Carolina, led the team in scoring this season with 18 goals and eight assists for a total of 44 points. She finished her career ranked second in UNC history for career points and goals. Toepel ranked second on the team in scoring with 12 goals and 6 assists for 30 points and also served as the team's leader on defense.
Named to the second team were sophomore midfielder Kristen McCann, freshman forward Katie McDonald and senior midfielder Stacey Schweighart. McDonald ranked third on the team in scoring this season, while McCann was fifth. Schweighart, a team captain, started every game and anchored the team's midfield.
North Carolina ended its season on Sunday with a 7-2 loss at Old Dominion in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The Tar Heels, who won the 1995, '96 and '97 NCAA championships, finished 13-8.
